あるサイトの売り文句に派手派手しく「SOUL MUSIC IS BACK!」との文字が。なるほど、フェイバリット・シンガーに挙げているメンツからも真っ直ぐな音楽性を想像することができる。MARVIN GAYE、AL GREEN、DONNY HATHAWAYなどなど…。
そのような音楽を演らせたら現在の第一人者としてまず名前が挙がるであろうJOHN LEGEND、彼の世界観に非常に近いものを持ったシンガーとの印象がまず第一。そして、何より声の雰囲気も良く似ている。シンプルな物言いになってしまうが、太目のテナーの特性をよく活かした心のこもった歌唱スタイル、前述のようにオールド・ソウルをこよなく愛し自らのものに消化、現代風のアレンジを施すやり方、そして当然ながら生楽器中心のトラック・メイキング…。JOHN LEGENDのフォロワーと言い切ってしまうのは本人に失礼かもしれないが、ターゲットとなるリスナー群は間違いなくそのあたりになるだろう。

そんな彼のおおらかな音楽性をストレートに感じられるのが(5)(6)のポピュラー的な要素も大きく使用したミッド・ナンバー。このあたりの作風はJOHN LEGENDも大いに得意としているところだが、むしろROB MURATの声のほうがふくよかさが感じられ、本家を凌ぐと言っても過言ではないだろう。
その他にもやはり現行R&Bスタイルからは大きく外れながらもその真摯なスタイルで聴かせてしまうスロウの(7)、まるで80年代のAOR全盛期のようなアーバン・ミッドの(8)、ネオ系スタイルとしての代表曲ともいえそうな(9)、ピアノのみをバックに切々としたメロディが心を打つスロウの(12)など。JOHNもだが、この手の声、スタイルはピアノの音とのマッチングが抜群に良い。この(12)などは影のアルバム・ハイライトとも言えそうだ。
