悲願成就！英KENTが心を込めてお届けいたしますOVATIONS（今作はLOUIS WILLIAMS & THE OVATIONS名義での発売）のGOLDWAX後の作品集！題して「ONE IN A MILLION: THE XL/SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS RECORDINGS」！2008年も英KENTは老舗らしいラインナップをリリースしてくれるであろうと思っておりましたが、さっそく3月下旬の新作（入荷は4月の予定）でいきなりの年間ベスト・クラスのリリースを敢行です。
思えば昨年にXLとSOUNDS OF MEMPHISの作品集「CAN'T BE SATISFIED: THE XL AND SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS STORY」をリリースしたころから、皆さまやはり期待されていましたよね!? そんな期待に見事に応えてくれる英KENTさん、流石であります。
このOVATIONSのGOLDWAX以降の後期作品は、過去に「ハヴィング・ア・パーティー」(PCD-1203) 、「フックト・オン・ア・フィーリング」(PCD-1310) としてPヴァインよりCD化されていましたが、ご承知のとおりすでに廃盤。中古市場でも驚くべき高値で取引されている。そんな彼らのXL〜SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS録音集、しばらくぶりに日の目を見ることとなりました。

後期の彼らにはオリジナル・アルバムが2枚存在する。「HOOKED ON A FEELING」(SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS 7001)、そして「HAVING A PARTY」(MGM 4945)がそれだ。その形に沿ったCD化がなされたのが前述したPヴァイン盤。さらにヴィヴィド・サウンドからそれ以降のシングルなどで構成された「スウィート・シング」(VSCD-0016/廃盤)というアルバムも発売されている。
それらの音源がすべて収録されているわけではないですが、一先ずはいつでも身近にいれるということで。過去にリリースされた前述の3枚のCDに未収録の音源が、今回のこのCDに収録されているかは要調査でございます。
DAN GREERとGEORGE JACKSONのサウンズ・オブ・メンフィスのマイルドな音に絡むルイの歌声。サウンドは甘くスウィートな香りを漂わせつつも、歌は気迫のこもったサム・クック後継。GOLDWAX期はもちろん絶対ですが、これも唯一無二の音であります。兎に角、いつでも手に取れるところに彼がいることの喜び...
さぁ、今年もサザン・ソウル復権の狼煙を上げるに相応しいタイトルのリリースが実現！この後も大いに期待してしまう、我らがサザン・ソウル・ファンなのであります！

The Ovations provide us with the next step into the Sounds Of Memphis vaults after our critically acclaimed Barbara and The Browns and the Sounds Of Meemphis / XL label story CDs. It is also effectively a companion volume to our compilation of Ovations' Goldwax recordings (CDKEND 246) that gathered up their incredible 60s sides. It contains 22 tracks of the finest 70s soul harmony recorded in Memphis and Muscle Shoals.
The CD contains the best of the Ovations releases from 1972-1978 including two US R&B hits – 'Touching Me' and 'Having A Party'. There are also cuts from both of the Ovations rare SOM albums and singles produced by Mike Curb, Clayton Ivy, Dan Greer and George Jackson and others. The CD includes 'Til I Find Some Way' which has been picking up plays on the soul scene. This is the first time that these cuts have been issued on CD.
We have also dug out some amazing previously unreleased tracks of exceptional quality. These include a session of demos that were intended as a follow up to the group's Chess release that were lost for over 30 years, and a wonderful cut called 'Soul Train' that could easily become a fan favourite.
The booklet contains an in-depth sleeve note by Martin Goggin that includes interviews with the last remaining member of the group, Nate Lewis, and the producer of many of the tracks Dan Greer. It also has many rare photographs and illustrations making it a worthy addition to our telling of the Sounds Of Memphis and Ovations stories.
