CURTIS MAYFIELD is often referred to as the architect of the Chicago soul sound and his magic touch is certainly felt at the heart of these recordings. But Curtis is only half of our story, his oft overlooked partner Eddie Thomas completes the picture. It was this partnership that formed Curtom Records in 1968, so called after their pet names for each other - Curt and Tom. The pair had already worked together as writers and producers at ABC-Paramount but when their contract was up they went independent acquiring offices at 8543 Stony Island and a distribution deal with Buddah. Eddie brought with him his eponymous Thomas imprint and Curtis added his earlier short lived Windy C and Mayfield masters.
Eddie came up with the company slogan “We’re A Winner” and indeed they were!
